We, too, have become ruins
Organized by Alex Paik

Trestle Gallery is proud to present We, too, have become ruins, a solo exhibition of the work of Esperanza Mayobre organized by Alex Paik. Mayobre's graphite transfer wall drawings, created by tracing photos of modular foam core models, function as ghostly monuments to the failures and excesses of her home cities of Caracas, Venezuela and New York City. These empty cityscapes take on another reading as our relationships with cities have changed within the context of the global pandemic — they have become sites emptied out of their vibrancy but at the same time sites for the potential for change and the largest global protests for social justice in decades. Mayobre’s gold grid drawings are meditations on the ongoing crisis in Venezuela as the cash-strapped government continues to quietly deforest the Amazon, causing irreversible ecological and financial harm to the local communities. Formally they are based on indigenous weaving practices and her childhood memories of watching weavers from the South of the Orinoco River.

Counterflags
Curated by Natalia Viera Salgado

Counterflags reflect on the performativity and choreographed gesture of creating flags. Beyond ideas of nationalism(s), this exhibition explores the relationships to place, historical narratives, identities, borders, language, and the utility of this object. How can the design and presentation of flags be acts of resistance to colonial paradigms?

This exhibition offers counternarratives around these ideas and features work by Lizania Cruz, Kahlil Robert Irving, Edra Soto, Carlos Martiel, José Castrellón, Jason Mena, Melissa Raymond, René Sandín, María Lulú Varona, Ricardo Cabret, Esperanza Mayobre, and Esvin Alarcón Lam.
